What is Spirituality and How to Be Spiritual?
In this short post, you’ll learn about Spirituality. People often confuse and conflate many things with Spirituality. So, there is a possibility that being Spiritual is very different from what you think it is. I’ll also examine the ‘How to’ component… How to use this life changing information to be Spiritual.

What is Spirituality?
What is Spirituality? What does it mean to be Spiritual? These are the most basic questions many ask.
There is one actual answer to these questions and it’s really quite simple. As you will soon see in a paragraph below, I’ll answer these questions with a few, simple words. But, and this is where things often get confusing for some folks, although the basic explanation can be simply stated, its connotations go much deeper and are far more complex.
Key Takeaway...
Spirituality is the desire and practice of becoming aware of the inner,
Spiritual components of ourselves — our true Spiritual nature.
So, let’s begin with the previously promised, simple definition of Spirituality:
Spirituality is the desire and practice of becoming aware of the inner, Spiritual components of ourselves — our true Spiritual nature.
That’s it. That’s all that Spirituality is. And, to be Spiritual, one need do nothing more than take appropriate actions, whatever they may be, to achieve the aforementioned goal — to become aware of our true Spiritual nature.
All People Are Spiritual, by Nature
In fact, it is true that all people are Spiritual, regardless of how they conduct themselves. Whether they are considered good or bad, angelic or evil, whether they meditate or not, attend religious services and believe the teachings of any religion or not and, notwithstanding whatever else they may do in life, they are Spiritual.
You are Spiritual… right now. Here’s why: You are a Spirit which occupies a body. Many think it’s the opposite, that they are a body which has a Spirit. That’s a misunderstanding of our true nature.
It is the Spirit which gives the body life, not the other-way-around. It is not the body and brain which create and controls the Spirit. Therefore, by your very, individual existence as a Spirit, you are Spiritual. Simple as that.
Key Takeaway...
You are Spiritual… right now. Here’s why: You are a Spirit which occupies a body. Many think it’s the opposite, that they are a body which has a Spirit. That’s a misunderstanding of our true nature.
This may be a revelation to some, new information. Others may already accept this as truth but have trouble applying it. This is understandable as most are not exposed to these simple truths about life, nor are they taught what to do with this vital information.
It’s All About The Inner Selves
There are 5 different components to your Spiritual nature. Everybody has these. If they didn’t, they would not be alive. These 5 things are: The God Self, the Individualized Self, the True Self, the Ego self, and the Communicator.
It’s not possible to clearly explain these components in a short blog post like this but please open yourself to the reality that they do exist and are the foundation of you… and everyone else.
If you want to learn more about the 5 Inner Selves — how they work and how to use them to create your best life — I’ve written a book that goes into great depth about this critical subject called, Discovering Your God Self… The Incredible Secrets of Your Spiritual Nature Revealed.
For now, please accept that these 5 things form a complex relationship within you and are constantly at work. Gaining understanding about and making better use of these 5 components is the purpose of life and is the entire point of Spirituality.
How To Be Spiritual
This brings us to the next question: How to be Spiritual?
Building an awareness of these 5 components is the first aspect of Spirituality. Once you’ve taken this initial step, simply become intellectually aware of the reality that these 5 different components exist within you, you’ll have taken a giant leap in consciousness and are now on the path of living Spiritually.
This is what Spirituality is.
The next step is to become internally aware of these elements as they work within you, which is done on a ‘feeling’ level. You then are in a position to learn to balance them — to actively choose to which aspect you’d like to identify and resonate with, and act and react from — and to actively use these components to make better decisions and choices in your life. This is living Spiritually and the realm of higher consciousness living.
Being Spiritual is not about how many hours you meditate each day, the incense you burn, how many stones and pretty amethysts you’ve placed around your home, the books you read, or anything else like this.
None of those things are bad and some can be extremely beneficial in your Spiritual practice. But none of them make you Spiritual. As mentioned above, you already are Spiritual.
Key Takeaway...
Being Spiritual is not about how many hours you meditate each day, the incense you burn, how many stones and pretty amethysts you’ve placed around your home, the books you read, or anything else like this.
Practicing Spirituality
What I’m talking about here is the practice of Spirituality; this is how to live Spiritually.
This, too, is a simple concept to convey but has more complex underpinnings. Living Spiritually is the art and practice of being consciously aware of your 5 inner components in each and every moment of each and every day. But this awareness is not easy and, honestly, is not enough.
The next part of this multi-faceted equation is to actively choose… To make a conscious choice to live from the love aspect of you, the True Self, rather than from its younger brother, the fear aspect of you, the Ego self.
The goal is to balance those 2 components which, together, comprise the Individualized Self. The Individualized Self ‘you’. But for most, these 2 are out of balance. The Ego self has taken charge of the Individualized Self. It’s not supposed to be that way.
The Ego self is the source of all the hatred and evil we see in our world. It’s not bad, though, and it has good traits, too, like stopping us from jumping from a cliff to certain death.
But it’s not supposed to be in control. Unfortunately, most — likely over 99% of all people — have ceded control to it and allow it to rule the roost, to make all our choices for us. We give it all our power.
Spirituality is About Reclaiming Your Power
When we rebalance these 2 components, the Individualized Self is able to make our choices with input from both the Ego self and the True Self. We then make better choices.
Key Takeaway...
Learning to discern between these 2 voices within, the True Self and the Ego self, and then consciously choosing to listen to the True Self is the only purpose of life. This is what Spirituality is all about.
Better choices are the key to a better life for you and a better world for all. Input from the True Self is essential to this equation. When you allow the Ego self to be in charge, it will overshadow the True Self.
The Ego self has a very loud, domineering voice. It demands to be heard. It will do everything it can to get its way, regardless of any current and future negative consequences that come your way as a result of the choices you will make.
The True Self is gentle and quiet. It patiently waits in the background for you, your Individualized Self, to actively call upon it for its input and guidance.
Learning to discern between these 2 voices within, the True Self and the Ego self, and then consciously choosing to listen to the True Self is the only purpose of life. This is what Spirituality is all about.
The Power of Experience
Everything else we do, think, and dream are just experiences. This is not to minimize all these things, as they are important. They help us achieve the purpose of life — learning to hear and discern between the 2 voices within the Individualized Self — and they have one other function.
Experience is the reason we are here. This is how the God Self expands its consciousness and how we learn and grow collectively and individually.
Your God Self is an individual portion of the Greater God. The Greater God is ever expanding, and never judging.
Experience is the teacher, the tool for expansion of consciousness and life.
Key Takeaway...
Experience is the reason we are here. This is how the God Self expands its consciousness and how we learn and grow collectively and individually.
Conclusion
You are not a body with a Spirit. You are a Spirit currently inhabiting a body so that you can better experience, enjoy, and learn from the physical world.
As a Spirit in the physical world, you are subject to the allure of the world’s distractions which can draw you away from your Spirituality. The goal is to live in this world but not be ‘of’ this world.
Experience life and all your physical existence has to offer, but do so in a ‘conscious’ way, with full and current awareness of the 5 inner components, your Spiritual selves.
