In this short post, I’ll explain body, mind, and spirit: the connection and the disconnects that create confusion and complexity around what really is a very simple subject.
What is The Soul?
When it comes to the ‘soul’, I prefer to use the word ‘spirit’ as this term more accurately describes the with modern understanding of the true nature of man and the universe. The is no difference between these two terms, soul and spirit. For the purposes of this writing, consider them interchangeable.
That bit of housekeeping out of the way, then what is the spirit? The spirit is the essence of who we are. Without the spirit within, we simply would not be. The spirit is the force that gives the body life. There is some confusion about that, too, which I’ll discuss in a bit. But first, let’s talk a little bit more about the spirit.
There is a Spirit within each one of us and it consists of five specific elements. These elements are: the God Self, the Individualized Self, and the Communicator.
“But wait… You said five, and that’s only three!”
Key Takeaway...

The Spirit Explained
True. This is because the other two elements are components of the Individualized Self. They form the Individualized Self. These two elements are: the True Self and the Ego self.
Even though these two are mere components of the Individualized Self, they dictate everything in our lives, making them critical to our happiness, inner peace, and success.
I won’t get into a detailed description of these two critical elements here, as it’s an extensive discussion. But one important factor to consider is that the dynamic between the Ego self and the True Self is what has been termed the Duality Within. A detailed explanation and discussion about these five elements are in the book, “Discovering Your God Self… The Incredible Secrets of Your Spiritual Nature Revealed”.
Body with a Spirit?
Earlier, I alluded to a common misconception that creates confusion for many. That is the reality that the spirit is the force and essence which gives the body life. It’s not the other way around.
Each of us is not a body with a spirit. We are, each one of us, a spirit currently inhabiting a body. We are spirits not bodies! The difference may seem semantical, I know, but it is not. In fact, the different between these two perspectives is huge.
Unfortunately, many religions teach this incorrectly, falsely preaching that the body is primary, and the spirit is created as the result of the body having been born.
Key Takeaway...
Each of us is not a body with a spirit. We are, each one of us, a spirit currently inhabiting a body.
We are spirits not bodies!
That is incorrect. The body is given life by only by virtue of the spirit entering the unborn body, which happens just moments before the time of birth. There is proof of this, if one chooses to accept this obvious proof as reality, and this proof of this is seen everyday in the phenomena of stillborn babies.
Stillborn babies are bodies that enter the world in a lifeless state, even though everything was fine in the days leading up to the time of birth. Why? There’s a very simple explanation which makes complete sense when reality enters the discussion.
That reality is: we are spirits currently inhabiting bodies, (not the other way around), and the spirit enters the body only moments prior to the birth of the body.
So, a stillborn baby is one where, at the last minute, the spirit chose — employing its free will and choice — to not enter that body. There could be many reasons for this but the most common is that the parent’s situation changed during the months of gestation and the original spirit would no longer be able to achieve its planned goals for that particular life. So that spirit simply opted out of that body at the last moment when there was no time for another spirit to agree to inhabit that baby’s body.
The result: a stillborn baby. For those looking for proof of our spiritual nature being the essence of life, there it is.
The Mind
This is another term surrounded by confusion. When you think about the ‘Mind’ are you really thinking about the ‘Brain’?
These two are different. The brain is an organ within the body. It’s like a computer. But, like a computer, it is highly subject to faulty information. While the brain does have the ability to think and reason, all its thoughts and reasonings are influenced by the information it already has.
Key Takeaway...
When the Ego self is involved with the brain while considering any particular subject, as it usually is, stubbornness becomes a big factor. Truth becomes clouded by opinion. This is a powerful tool the Ego self uses to maintain its control over our lives and it happens continually, all day long for most people.
If the brain has faulty information about a subject, any thoughts, answers, or conclusions it may draw also may be faulty. The degree to which is determined more by the relationship between the Ego self and the brain.

The Mind is the ‘library’ of universal intelligence, which is available to all when one knows how to consciously access it. When we have not yet acquired this ability — and it is a learned process — it still is unconsciously accessed for us by the True Self when appropriate.
This goes back to the ‘plan’ made for a particular life. If you came here with the plan and intent to invent something, (for example: like the smartphone), even if you have not yet developed the conscious ability to tap into the universal mind of everything, where this idea already exists, your True Self will get it for you and then do its best to overcome any resistance from the Ego self to communicate this idea and information to you.
Once the information has been received, consciously or otherwise, the brain then can come into play to use its knowledge of the physical world to help bring it to reality.

Body, Mind, Spirit: The Body
And this brings us to the body. In addition to the body being a vehicle used by the spirit to navigate the physical world, it also is a powerful communication tool.
This is why it is important to develop a finely tuned ability for inner awareness. Outer-world focus is distracting. Ultimately, it’s only there to be experienced and learned from, but not to guide us.
When focus is turned inward — within the body — the spirit is found. The spirit uses the body to communicate with us. That is one way it gets our attention and provides guidance.
And this guidance is available to all people for even the most mundane things, such as which cantaloupe on the shelves in a grocery store is the ripest. But you must know how to use it… How to listen. And it’s not done with the ears. (Join the waitlist for a course I will be offering that will teach all this, and much more.)
This is the essence of the Body, Mind, Spirit connection.
About Me.
Bruce Bernstein has been a student of all things spiritual for over 35 years. As many do, he began with books, crystals, and other group activities. But his search became a solo journey. He had no teachers or gurus to consult with which forced him to look within, to his inner guidance. This is where he found the best information and answers to his questions. He now teaches the things he learned with the hope of helping others more quickly accomplish what he did, and to do it with fewer challenges.
